With Malinowski in the Postmodern Desert

We are truly the International Thomas Merton Society.  Małgorzata Poks will come from Poland to present her paper at the ITMS General Meeting at Loyola in Chicago. She teaches courses in American literature and is the author of Thomas Merton and Latin America: A Consonance of Voices.

Małgorzata is also one of our International Advisors, and last year received the Thomas Merton Award from the ITMS. It is given to an individual “who has written and published in the period between the General Meetings a work on Merton and his concerns that has brought provocative in-sight and fresh direction to Merton studies”.

Her paper is titled, “With Malinowski in the Postmodern Desert”.  Here is how she describes it:

“Bronislaw Malinowski’s intimate Diary in the Strict Sense of the Term (published in 1967) revealed a shocking split between the ideal ethnologist and the actual individual caught between two incongruous cultures. My paper will argue the centrality of the “Malinowski section” for Merton’s The Geography of Lograire.”
